The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has handcuffed Melissa Mirick, a 50-year-old woman from Cairo, Georgia, on charges related to a suspected multi-million dollar theft. According to a GBI press release, Mirick is facing eight felony counts of Forgery in the Third Degree and one count of Theft by Taking.

Assistance from the GBI was summoned by the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office on August 8, after they reported that funds managed by South Georgia Law Associates, LLC in Thomasville had been unlawfully redirected. The investigation, which spanned several months, pointed a finger at Mirick, the firm’s office manager, who had absolute control over the firm's finances. Allegedly, she engaged in moving money between the law firm and GFA Design/Build Contractors, LLC., a company she co-owns with her husband, located in Cairo, Georgia.

The extent of the theft is thought to exceed millions, although the final tally has yet to be officially disclosed. Mirick was arrested on December 9 and is now in custody at the Thomas County Jail. The case remains active, and it is anticipated that more charges will be forthcoming.

The GBI is actively seeking additional information and witnesses in the case. They have encouraged anyone with knowledge to step forward by contacting the GBI Thomasville Office at 229-225-4090. Tips can also be submitted anonymously by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), or online through the GBI’s website, or by utilizing the See Something, Send Something mobile application. Upon completion, the investigation will be passed on to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office who will handle prosecution matters.
