Residents and workers in the McKinley Park neighborhood are on edge after a series of armed robberies targeting food delivery drivers. The Chicago Police Department has issued a business alert for the 9th District, detailing multiple recent incidents in which delivery drivers were confronted and robbed by assailants wielding guns.
The pattern of robberies has occurred sporadically over the past few months, with offenders demanding personal items such as money, food, and cell phones. The Chicago Police reported that the first incident happened on the 3700 block of S. Wolcott on October 21, 2024, and a string of similar crimes followed, the latest being on December 16, 2024, on the 3700 block of S. Wood. In each case, the victims were to simply deliver food but found themselves facing life-threatening situations instead.
The department has provided descriptions of the offenders involved in these robberies. Among them are a Hispanic female and male, both estimated to be between 22-28 years old, a male with an "Edgar Haircut," and two Hispanic males, one with a distinctive face tattoo. The suspects were reported to use various vehicles, including a red Ford SUV, a gray Minivan, and a gold Chevrolet Tahoe during the occurrences.
The public is being urged to stay vigilant and to report any suspicious activity promptly. "Always be aware of your surroundings," advises the alert, and to "Immediately dial 9-1-1 and remain on the scene when possible," if confronted by an assailant. Witnesses are encouraged to remember unique physical characteristics and, if possible, to preserve any video surveillance footage to aid in the police investigation.
