Federal prosecutors have implicated Chicago rapper Lil Durk, born Durk Banks, in yet another murder-for-hire plot, this one dating back to January 2022, according to documents unsealed this week and first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. The incident involved the fatal shooting of Stephon Mack as he left an anti-violence program in Roseland, where the investigation has unearthed social media posts and financial transactions suggesting Banks may have paid for the hit.
Anthony Montgomery-Wilson and Preston Powell stand accused of carrying out the attack purportedly paid for by Lil Durk, the evidence includes incriminating texts and a social media pose where one of the men posed with cash following the shooting, which was referenced in the CBS News as "Did Durk give U that money?" substantiating communications and confessions unraveling the rapper's tangled web of alleged revenge and violence, Banks currently faces charges in a separate murder-for-hire case targeting Quando Rondo, another rapper.
In that Los Angeles case, Durk is accused of putting a price on the head of Tyquian Bowman, alias Quando Rondo, in a plot uncovered after an assault last August that killed Rondo's cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, as reported by CBS News. Prosecutors allege Lil Durk's motivation stems from retaliation for the murder of his protege, King Von, whose life was cut short outside an Atlanta hookah lounge in 2020.
Lil Durk has professed his innocence pleading not guilty, his legal team pushing for his pretrial release backed by $2.3 million in property and a million dollars in cash from Sony Music, despite the federal apprehension of no combination of conditions being adequate to ensure his appearance in court or public safety, his history narrating a tale of leveraging his musical influence and capital to pursue personal vendettas, a scenario where he has been denied bond as he awaits trial.
As the case unfolds, Durk remains detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, while Quando Rondo, the target of the alleged plot by Durk, is currently serving a 33-month sentence for a separate federal drug conviction.
