As the final hours of the year tick down, Chicago's public transportation agencies have come together to make sure that revelers can get around the city without dipping into their pockets. Announcing their program for the evening, both the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and Pace have said that they will be offering free rides to passengers to encourage safe celebrations. According to ABC7 Chicago, rides on the CTA will begin at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday and will run until 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, with no need for passengers to use a Ventra card during this time.

While the initiative backed by the Miller Lite Free Rides program is a staple of the city's New Year's Eve safety strategy, in a statement obtained by ABC7 Chicago, CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. expressed his thanks for the partnership with Miller Lite and emphasized the alternative it provides to Chicago residents, ensuring a safe and reliable transportation option. This longstanding tradition is bolstered by additional services such as extended hours and extra routes that cater to the anticipated increase in demand, especially around areas like Navy Pier where major festivities are held, riders have seen an over 60% increase in the past three years proving the initiative’s effectiveness.

Pace is also participating by offering free bus and paratransit services, also from 10:00 p.m. Tuesday until 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, but remind users of the limited service available during these hours. In a note echoed by WTTW News, they reassured that paratransit service will operate non-stop throughout the night in Chicago. In line with holiday scheduling, both CTA and Pace will adhere to Sunday protocols on New Year's Day.

Metra is also tossing its hat into the ring of New Year's Eve beneficence, offering complimentary commutes starting at 6:00 p.m. for all trains arriving at or departing from downtown stations. The alcohol ban after 7:00 p.m. ensures that festivities on New Year’s Eve maintain a level of decorum, as WTTW News reports, and Metra's Sunday/holiday schedule will resume on New Year’s Day, although some lines will receive no service. It's a coordinated effort by Chicago's transportation agencies to make sure the ushering in of the New Year isn’t just a celebratory affair, but also a safer and more connected one for all inhabitants, with the boon of inclusivity echoed through the city's veins of rail and road.
