A Christmas Eve house fire in Grayson has left seven people without a home and caused considerable damage to two neighboring residences. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, Gwinnett County fire crews were dispatched to the scene on Swan Ridge Circle shortly before the midday hour. Upon arrival, the firefighters were met with one house fully ablaze and the fire aggressively spreading to adjacent homes.
Anissa Dallas, affected by the fire and who has since found herself without refuge, recounted the moment her home was consumed by flames. Speaking to FOX 5 Atlanta, Dallas described a knocking sound that preceded the discovery of the fire, a moment that led to her, her son, and her boyfriend's narrow escape from their home. Immobilized by diabetes and her status as an amputee on dialysis, they narrowly made it out of the house with the assistance of her son and the quick thinking of her boyfriend, who fetched her wheelchair amidst the chaos.
The fire officials managed to control the fire within an hour, a testament to their prompt and aggressive response. Yet, in the wake of this rapid containment, residents grapple with the loss of not only their homes but also irreplaceable personal items. "Only thing that’s hurting me is I couldn’t get my mother and my brother’s ashes," Dallas told FOX 5 Atlanta in a moment of revealed anguish. Despite this, Dallas maintains a perspective of gratitude, recognizing the value of life above material possessions. The source of the fire remains under investigation.
Further details provided by Atlanta News First indicated that while there were no physical injuries reported, one home was declared a total loss with two others significantly damaged. Dallas, whose condition required that her boyfriend and a neighbor help her escape, reflected on the incident as the "best Christmas" because of their survival. The American Red Cross has stepped in to assist the displaced six adults and one child. An online fundraiser has also been initiated to support Dallas and her family through this difficult time.
