In a display of excellence not only on the football field but also in community impact, Orlando Brown Jr. of the Cincinnati Bengals has been nominated for the league's prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. This accolade recognizes players for their community service efforts as well as gridiron prowess. According to the Bengals' official website, this nomination honors Brown's steadfast advocacy and educational work for Type 1 diabetes (T1D), a personal cause due to his family's experiences with the disease.
Beyond the tackles and touchdowns, Brown's drive extends to the fight against T1D. He made his mark by speaking at Breakthrough T1D's Children's Congress in Washington, D.C., to shine a light on T1D and push for the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program. He's equally invested time with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's Juneteenth Jubilee, not to mention his engagement with Kroger in a collective effort to shed light on the access issues regarding T1D educational resources and affordable insulin in Black communities. "I'm so thankful for the opportunity to represent the Bengals organization as its Walter Payton Man of the Year," Brown said, a sentiment highlighted in the report by WLWT.
Brown's advocacy for T1D is fueled by the personal challenges faced by his family, with a history that includes his father, Orlando Brown Sr., a former NFL player who passed away from complications related to T1D, and a younger brother who also battles the condition. As reported by FOX19, Brown expressed a deeply personal mission: "This is a goal that I've set for myself, to be able to light other people’s candles, to give someone comfort and allow others to know that you're not alone."
For his extensive charity work, the NFL will recognize Brown with a donation of up to $55,000 to his cause and the chance to bring the home up to $265,000 if he secures the win during the NFL Honors ceremony, which will be broadcast nationally on February 6, 2025. Fans can also bolster his cause through the Nationwide Charity Challenge by posting #WPMOYChallenge with their favorite nominee's name or voting directly online, as detailed by FOX19.
