In a move aimed at improving community safety and offering peace of mind, the Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) has initiated a Safe Storage Program that allows gun owners to store their firearms at a secured CPD facility for up to six months, an option that could be a boon for those dealing with personal crises, or when the presence of children and visitors makes firearm safety especially pertinent.
As outlined in the Cincinnati Police Department's (CPD) recent press release, participating in this program is an act of choice. Gun owners interested must schedule a time with the CPD's property room. They are instructed to bring their unloaded weapon, a signed Storage Agreement, proof of ownership, and photo identification.
Upon arrival at the property room, located at 801 Linn Street, CPD ensures each firearm is empty, runs it through the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN), and checks against crime databases NCIC and LEADS, steps meant to reassure and maintain the integrity of the process.
The firearms will stay in CPD's hands for an initial three months. After that, a check-in with the owner will determine whether an additional three-month period is necessary. Owners must claim their property within seven days after the six months or their specified storage time. They'll have to make an appointment to retrieve their firearm during the property room's specific hours, from 6 AM to 2 PM on weekdays. This procedure is concluded with a background check to ensure a lawful return.
Those with any inquiries can reach out to the property room directly at (513) 352-6480 or by shooting an email over to [email protected], and broader program questions can be answered by calling the city's helpline at 311 or (513) 765-1212 if calling from outside city limits.
