For those in Cleveland preparing to face the weather this weekend, the National Weather Service Cleveland has issued a forecast that requires some attention. According to the latest update, high pressure is moving eastward, and a weakening low-pressure system is expected to bring moisture our way, with rain chances increasing as Sunday approaches.
High clouds are anticipated today before the weather takes a turn with a low-pressure system lifting from the mid-Mississippi Valley. As a result, rain is set to spread across the Cleveland area from southwest to northeast, with a possibility of freezing rain in certain parts due to surface temperatures hovering near or below freezing. However, the National Weather Service Cleveland notes, "Surface temperatures across portions of the area will be near or just below freezing as the precipitation shield moves into the area, which could result in a brief period of freezing rain before dew points and surface temps rise above freezing." The expected warming trend begins today with mid-30s to 40s by Sunday.
Another issue compounds Sunday night through Tuesday night as several fronts move through the region. The NWS forecast anticipates scattered rain showers, and "Rain showers may mix with wet snow in interior NW PA, but any snow accumulation should be no more than a trace." There's also an outlook of steady to heavy rainfall as a series of cold fronts trail the warm front, bringing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.
Mid-week might present another wave of challenges with a potent shortwave trough and attendant cold front expected, leading to widespread rain and a potential snow mix by Wednesday night. The National Weather Service Cleveland states, "Low-level CAA behind the front and nocturnal cooling should allow the rain to mix with or change to snow during the evening." As temperatures drop, lake-effect precipitation is also possible, affecting those near and downwind of Lake Erie.
The aviation outlook isn't too clear for those navigating the skies. The National Weather Service Cleveland anticipates deteriorating conditions with rain through Sunday, leading to potential difficulties. Pilots may face fluctuating visibility conditions, moving from VFR to possible IFR visibilities late in the period due to heavier rainfall.
Mariners aren't left out of the weather talks. The upcoming conditions over Lake Erie are likely to be equally testing with expected easterly to southeasterly winds and a possibility for waves to build up, particularly in the wake of Monday's cold front that may call for a Small Craft Advisory. It's clear that whether on land, air, or sea, Cleveland residents and visitors will need to be prepared for various weather conditions in the coming days.
