In a move lauded by conservationists, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors has rezoned 2,400 acres of land, effectively preserving these parcels as open space. The Board's unanimous decision came during a special session held last Tuesday.
Following a detailed study conducted by various county departments over the last year, the rezoning includes large tracts around Rogers Lake and smaller parcels in Kachina Village. Adam Hess, Supervisor for District 3, acknowledged the public's existing appreciation for these spaces, saying, "I think that most residents and visitors already considered these areas open space," according to a Coconino County statement. "It’s good to make it official and a smart move to preserve more open space in District 3."
This conservation effort is in alignment with the County’s Comprehensive Plan, which prioritizes the protection of open spaces to support the environmental, social, and economic health of the area. The plan endorses providing access to these spaces for both residents and visitors, where it is deemed suitable.
Board Chair and Supervisor for District 4, Judy Begay, also expressed her endorsement of the measure. "I fully support this rezone and I want to thank our staff for the guided tours of this land," Begay commented. She highlighted the importance of such initiatives for wildlife, "We saw numerous herds of deer and elk during our visit and I am delighted the Board has the opportunity to preserve these wildlife habitats," a statement obtained by Coconino County. The zoning change became effective immediately after the vote.
