Following a shooting on Interstate 24 West that occurred on Sunday near the Silliman Evans Bridge, authorities shut down parts of the highway, leading to significant traffic disruptions in downtown Nashville. The incident, which involved a car carrying four individuals being fired upon by another vehicle, resulted in one person sustaining serious injuries. The victim was admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as reported by WSMV4.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) disclosed that the shooting was precipitated by an argument earlier in the day at a location in North Nashville. According to authorities, the dispute escalated when the suspect's vehicle followed the victim’s car, merging onto the interstate from I-40, and subsequently, gunfire ensued. As reported by NewsChannel5, the suspect remains at large and is deemed armed and dangerous, posing a potential threat to others.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) indicated that following the shooting, the I-24 West downtown loop was closed and traffic was diverted at Exit 211A on I-40 West and Exit 211B on I-40 East. WKRN noted that Saturn’s four occupants had a previous encounter with the suspect in North Nashville, which led to the events unfolding near the bridge. During the closure, TDOT’s SmartWay map showed significant backups and provided updates on alternate routes for motorists.
Although the highway was reopened later in the evening, the investigation into the incident and manhunt for the perpetrator continues. MNPD has yet to release detailed descriptions or information regarding possible suspects. The Shelby Avenue exit was also closed but has since been reopened, adding to a slew of actions taken by officials to manage the incident. The investigation and search for the suspect is active, and the MNPD is asking for the public's assistance in this matter.
