In a significant move supporting public health and social equity, the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) has elevated Dr. Brittany Cox to the role of assistant commissioner, where she'll oversee the Division of Health Disparities Elimination. In this new role, Cox will be tasked with guiding programs and initiatives designed to level the healthcare playing field for Tennessee's underserved and minority communities.
Cox's promotion comes on the back of nearly a decade of dedicated service in the public health sector within TDH. She previously took charge as assistant regional director for the Mid-Cumberland Regional Office and had a stint as the public health county director for multiple Tennessee counties, including Wilson, Trousdale, and Cheatham. Cox has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to serving the health needs of diverse populations, despite having the enormous responsibility of financial and operational oversight on her shoulders. According to the Tennessee Department of Health, her experience and education are expected to be key in steering the division toward meaningful outcomes.
Speaking of educational credentials, Cox brings to the table a Doctor of Public Health degree from Walden University in Minneapolis, as well as a Master of Science in Health and Human Performance from Middle Tennessee State University. Her expertise in public health is complemented by her active involvement in the Tennessee Public Health Association and community engagement, like being a Pencil Partner volunteer in Metro Nashville Public Schools.
The Tennessee Department of Health remains clear in its mission to improve the health and wellness of all its citizens, with a spotlight on marginalized groups. With the appointment of Dr. Cox, there's an anticipation that new policies and services directed toward the diverse needs of Tennessee's populace will gain traction. Many in Wilson, Trousdale, and Cheatham counties already familiar with the impact of her past public health initiatives can expect similar dedication and effectiveness in her widened scope of influence. Cox's commitment to enhancing health outcomes is evident, from her earlier role as a planning and assessment coordinator to her ascension into the upper echelons of the state’s health department leadership.
