The City of El Cajon has announced the appointment of Captain Jeremiah Larson as the new Chief of Police, with the promotion set to take effect on December 18. Larson, a Granite Hills High School alumnus, has worn the badge for his hometown agency since 2002, steadily ascending the ranks from Sergeant to Lieutenant and then Captain in just last year.
Larson's expansive career in El Cajon includes time spent in Patrol and Investigations, with roles in the Special Enforcement and Training Divisions. He's also to be recognized for his long-standing commitment as a Field Training Officer, a Cadet Advisor, and an 18-year stint as a SWAT team member. City Manager Graham Mitchell, who chose Larson for the role, said, "I can’t think of anyone more qualified to serve and lead the department than Captain Jeremiah Larson." The statement obtained by El Cajon's official announcement underscored Mitchell's belief in Larson's ethics and community service.
Outgoing Chief Mike Moulton shares Mitchell's confidence, stating, as per El Cajon's news release, "This decision reflects his exceptional qualifications and the trust and confidence placed in him to lead our department into the future." Moulton's tenure will be followed by Larson, whom he praised for a solid work ethic and dedication to the department's values. Larson's academic accolades include a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s in Public Safety Leadership, coupled with his graduation from the prestigious Senior Management Leadership Institute for Police.
During the El Cajon City Council meeting, Larson, who is set to officially take up his new role on January 14, 2025, expressed his anticipation and honor to lead the agency. "Our department is filled with the most dedicated and hard-working professionals in law enforcement. I am honored and excited to lead this agency, and I look forward to preserving and growing the community’s trust in its police department," Larson told El Cajon's news release.
