Tragedy struck in El Paso as 38-year-old motorcyclist, Kyle Leonard Calverly, tragically passed away in a crash caused by a suspected drunk driver. The collision took place when a truck, operated by 22-year-old Brandon Victor Shepherd, was executing a turn and collided with Calverly's motorcycle, which reportedly had been stolen. According to KVIA, the incident occurred at the intersection of Mesa and Castellano, resulting in Calverly being thrown from his bike before the truck continued to crash into the Angry Owl restaurant.
The fatal crash is not an isolated incident in the community, marking the 66th traffic fatality this year, a slight decline from the previous year's total. In a separate but equally heart-wrenching event, a Fort Bliss soldier, Juan Del Valle, has been charged in connection with a different crash that occurred on November 2nd. This earlier crash claimed the lives of a local teacher Dalia Olivas, aged 28, and her fiancé Rick Ballard, 29. As reported by El Paso Times, Del Valle appeared in court in a wheelchair and was denied bond reduction by the judge.
Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of Calverly's accident, as it currently remains unclear who ran the red light leading up to the crash. This update was shared by police who are intensively scrutinizing all details of the situation. The crash has prompted discussions within the community about road safety and the consequences of driving under the influence, which appear to quickly, to too often culminate in devastating outcomes.
Meanwhile, Del Valle is facing severe consequences as the judicial system processes the case. A bond hearing revealed the physical toll on the defendant, as he was described in court wearing a back brace. As detailed by KTSM, noting that his charges are part of a stronger push by El Paso authorities to crack down on drunk driving, an initiative that seeks to stem the distressing tide of alcohol-related incidents on the road.
