An 80-year-old hiker met a tragic end while navigating the Mount Olympus Trailhead on Christmas Day. William Thomas was found deceased by search and rescue teams after they were alerted by fellow hikers. The distress call came through around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, initiating a rapid response from local emergency crews.
According to Sgt. Christian Olson of the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, as obtained by KSL TV, that it was hikers who summoned the rescue crews initially. Meanwhile, amid the unfolding of the rescue operation, the exact details of Thomas's unfortunate demise were deduced to be the result of a fall, according to statements acquired by local news outlets.
Confirming the cause of death, Detective Bennett conveyed to ABC4 that, "At this time, it appears he died as a result of a fall he sustained while hiking." Emergency responders managed to reach Thomas on the trail but were unable to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
