Yesterday evening, a police chase following a shoplifting incident at Lakeside Mall led to a car crash near the I-610 and St. Bernard Avenue intersection. FOX 8 Live reports that one person was killed and two others were hospitalized. Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office (JPSO) deputies tried to stop a red SUV after an off-duty deputy saw a group of females stealing and fleeing the mall.
According to information obtained by WWLTV, the pursuit began on I-10 East but was quickly terminated by a JPSO supervisor."All deputies turned off their overhead lights, and progressed to the St. Bernard Ave. exit to turn around and head back to Jefferson Parish," as detailed in a release. The deputies discovered the crashed SUV upon reaching the end of the off-ramp.
The NOPD and New Orleans EMS were called to the scene, where they found the SUV had collided with another vehicle. WDSU reports confirmed that three female suspects fled the SUV on foot, with one adult female subsequently being detained near the crash site by JPSO deputies.
The investigation is now led by the NOPD, and St. Bernard Avenue remains closed as authorities gather evidence. Law enforcement continues to seek the whereabouts of the remaining suspects. Anyone with information related to the incident or the suspects' location is encouraged to come forward and contact the authorities.
