A tragic incident unfolded in Clayton County where a man died following a blaze that ravaged several storage sheds behind a residential property. Yesterday morning, firefighting teams responded to a fire at the intersection of Highway 138 and Lake Ridge Parkway. As reported by Atlanta News First, the fire had already consumed the structures by the time emergency services arrived at around 3:45 a.m.
The man's identity has not been released. The Clayton County Fire Department confirmed the fatality after extinguishing the intense flames. Interim Fire Chief Tim Sweat stated that the sheds were fully engulfed, and it was impossible to safely enter the structures once the fire was well underway. "There was no safe way for us to enter any of those structures to determine if someone could possibly be inside," Sweat told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Sweat also explained that there were no utility connections to the sheds, raising further questions about the cause of the fire. No power or gas lines were running to the units, and the reason for the fire remains unknown. Additionally, he remarked on the tragedy of the situation, given the holiday season. "It’s just a tragedy during this time as we’re celebrating Christmas and ringing in the new year," he said, according to Atlanta News First.
The homeowner, who preferred not to be interviewed on camera, shared with FOX 5 Atlanta that he occasionally allowed a man without housing, who was experiencing hardships, to stay in the shed. However, he was unaware the man was there that night. A neighbor, whose name was not provided for privacy reasons, expressed deep sorrow upon learning of the man's death. She had previously offered him support. "He was going through some things, so I just grabbed his hands and I’d say, ‘Would you like to have prayer today?’ And if they accept it, I pray," she told FOX 5 through her tears.
Investigations by the firefighters are ongoing as they interview residents of the home near the fire site. The incident casts a dark shadow over the community during a time that is usually filled with festive cheer and hopeful anticipation of the New Year.
