Travelers in the Cincinnati region are facing a significant detour after a fire necessitated the closure of Interstate 471 in the southbound direction at the Ohio River. The incident disrupted a key artery between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Newport, Kentucky, early in the morning beneath the Ohio approach to the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, a substantial blaze broke out at a playground in Sawyer Point Park right underneath the bridge's approach span.
Around 3:20 a.m. on November 1, the Cincinnati Fire Department was summoned to Pete Rose Way to tackle the unexpected inferno. They were greeted by an intense fire, with smoke and flames engulfing the air around and above I-471. Subsequently, the authorities have not yet pinpointed the cause of the fire, which is significant given its impact on local infrastructure and transportation.
The Ohio Department of Transportation has put detours in place in response to the ongoing road closure. Southbound traffic on I-471 is being rerouted via I-71 and I-75 South, and truck drivers, particularly those in semis, are advised to take I-275 east to bypass Cincinnati and evade potential delays. Moreover, all HAZMAT vehicles must adhere to the I-275 outer belt per the mandated detour routes.
There are additional traffic restrictions affecting downtown Cincinnati. Access to I-471 from Liberty Street, 5th Street, and U.S. 50 East and West has been cut off. Nevertheless, it's important to note that U.S. 50 remains open for thru traffic. For the latest updates on Sawyer Park and the surrounding facilities, which are likely to be impacted due to proximity to the fire, the Cincinnati Parks website provides ongoing information.
