Travelers heading through the Flagstaff area can look forward to smoother rides and improved access this holiday season, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) wraps up major roadwork on I-17. In a move anticipating the winter surge, a $35 million resurfacing project that improved 30 miles of southbound terrain, starting from McConnell Drive in Flagstaff down to the Mogollon Rim scenic overlook, has recently been completed, according to an ADOT press release.
In addition to the pavement, nine bridges were also refurbished, and several on- and off-ramps along this stretch were improved. The project, which began in May of the previous year, was completed just before Thanksgiving, carried out without delays despite the challenges posed by Arizona's winter weather.
In addition to the pavement improvements, a separate $8.2 million project revitalized the J.W. Powell Boulevard bridge near Pulliam Airport. This newly constructed bridge enhances connectivity, allowing for smoother traffic flow over I-17. Commuters and visitors to Fort Tuthill Park will experience a more efficient and less congested route.
Designed to support not only vehicles but also pedestrians and cyclists, the overhaul of this busy I-17 interchange brings about a larger, more accommodating structure. Work was completed in stages, with the new bridge constructed next to the old Powell Boulevard bridge, preserving the history of the location while ensuring a longer lifespan. As traffic was redirected to the new structure, the old bridge was retired, making way for progress in the form of concrete and steel.
