Randy Fine, aim to loosen the reins by allowing open carry of firearms and reversing a law that currently bars those under 21 from purchasing rifles. Despite the conservative supermajority in the Legislature, there’s palpable tension, as these bills prepare to face scrutiny in the Senate, where some opposition, notably from the chamber's new president, remains staunch and unyielding.
As survivors of the Parkland shooting and families of the victims once rallied at the Capitol, demanding reform, so today gun rights proponents push back, seeking to reclaim what they define as "God-given freedoms." "I look forward to our state once again earning the title of the Gunshine State, where citizens are no longer asked to trade God-given freedoms for a politician’s empty promise of security," Rep. Joel Rudman told NBC Miami with conviction, rooted in a philosophy that continues to stir contentious debate within the Sunshine State.
Contrasting this keen drive towards deregulation, Senate President Ben Albritton has expressed reticence. Last month, having taken his oath of office, Albritton shared his reservations, stating, “I’ve supported law enforcement my entire life (...) And I stand with them today in opposition,” concerning the topic of open carry, according to reports from AP News.
