Hillsborough County Administrator Bonnie Wise has once again signed an executive order to prolong the state of local emergency as residents continue grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The initial emergency order became effective on September 23, when the storm was bearing down on Florida, gnashing its teeth. Now, this extension dictates that the order will persist at least until December 30, as officials double down on their efforts to manage the ongoing crisis.
The nature of a local emergency typically restricts its duration to a mere seven days, necessitating subsequent extensions to maintain the administrative power needed in disaster scenarios. This legal maneuver, according to an official statement provided by Hillsborough County, allows rapid responses for "the health, safety, and welfare of the community," and also secures a method for federal funds to reimburse the county's coffers for certain expenses incurred due to Helene's wrath.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for all of Florida, showing the storm's widespread damage. Hillsborough County is not alone in facing challenges, as Hurricane Milton adds more urgency and complexity to the ongoing emergency efforts.
