A Florida man, Joseph Voigt, has been charged with the fatal shooting of his father and the wounding of his mother. The 23-year-old's violent act was reportedly initiated by his father's urges for him to get a job instead of playing video games, CBS News Miami reports. The incident occurred last Saturday, December 7, in Polk County, Florida, and later, Voigt was apprehended in Orlando.
Joseph Voigt explained to the authorities his distress over his father "riding his a--" about his life choices. His mother, Susan Voigt, 58, survived the attack and was the one who alerted the police. The father, Marvin Voigt, 63, was found dead with gunshot wounds in his driveway, the unfortunate outcome of the confrontation. The younger Voigt's criminal history is lined with previous encounters with the law, including discharging a weapon in a residential area and a battery offense. According to The New York Post, his prior transgressions ranged from reckless gunfire, purportedly borne of boredom, to using mace on individuals querying his presence in their neighborhood.
The emergency arrest in Orlando happened after Voigt fled the crime scene in the family vehicle, with the Orlando Police Department conducting a felony stop on International Drive around 2 a.m. In interviews following the arrest, local police expressed surprise at the gravity of this violent act, given the suspect's past. "There were no signs that would lead you to believe this would occur from this gentleman, I would say. At least I don’t see any from past behavior," Bartow Police Chief Steve Walker informed reporters, as reported by The New York Post.
Susan Voigt remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. "I’ve heard about the victims, they’re really good people," said Chief Walker, "It's senseless. You scratch your head and wonder why something like this happens," according to a The New York Post interview. Joseph Voigt is facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
