The Folsom Police Department is set to ramp up its traffic safety measures after landing a $125,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. This funding is aimed to back enforcement and education endeavors in hopes of curbing serious injuries and fatalities on the road. The program, which proceeds until September 2025, was announced by the Folsom Police Department as a stride towards safer roadways.

Sergeant Tim Galovich commented on the initiative, saying, "We are grateful to receive this grant, which will strengthen our traffic enforcement efforts and improve road safety." He elaborated on the Folsom Police Department's plan to increase enforcement of traffic laws, especially in high-risk areas. The objective is to dial down on dangerous driving behaviors, preclude crashes, and to make roads safer for the communal use.

Key components of the grant include DUI checkpoints, high-visibility operations against distracted driving, and enforcement on dangerous behaviors threatening cyclist and pedestrian safety. Also, the grant will focus on violations like speeding, failure to yield, and improper lane changes – the top contributors to accidents. A part of the funds will go toward community presentations touching various traffic safety issues, including distracted and impaired driving, as reported by the Folsom Police Department.

In addition to the outlined enforcement and educational programs, the Folsom Police Department’s grant will also foster collaborative efforts with neighboring agencies and provide officer training in areas such as the Standard Field Sobriety Test, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Expert certification. This educational aspect is critical in ensuring law enforcements are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge to deal with driving under influence and related offenses effectively, as per the Folsom Police Department.

The grant represents part of a broader strategy by the California Office of Traffic Safety, funded via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to mitigate traffic-related injuries and deaths across the state. The Folsom Police Department's adoption of these funds hopes to bring tangible changes to local driving habits and the overall safety of its roads.
