Rayful Edmond III, a name that became synonymous with drug trafficking and the crack epidemic in Washington D.C., has died at the age of 60, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed. According to a FOX 5 DC report, Edmond, who had been in a halfway house in Nashville following his release from prison, passed away on Tuesday, though his cause of death has not been disclosed.
Edmond's notoriety stems from his time as a prominent cocaine kingpin during the 1980s when he was at the center of a drug trade empire in D.C. He was arrested at the young age of 24 and faced life imprisonment in 1990 for his involvement in the city's burgeoning crack epidemic. The operations he ran were extensive—involved 150 people and were reportedly responsible for at least 30 murders, contributing to D.C.'s grim title as the "Murder Capital of the U.S." during that period.
In later years, Edmond struck a deal with authorities, becoming an informant which led to a reduction in his sentence. As detailed in the DC News Now coverage, he was set to be released from federal prison late next year. Justin Moore, Edmond's attorney, expressed his shock over the loss of his client in a social media post, stating, "I just talked to him yesterday. I am absolutely floored by this news."
Looking back on Edmond's history, 7News' former D.C. Bureau Chief Sam Ford reflected on the drug kingpin's influence and eventual downfall. "He was the kingpin here in D.C. supposedly, and I understand, probably a bigger drug dealer in prison than he was here on the streets of the Nation’s Capital," Ford said in an interview retrieved by 7News. Ford also shared a haunting memory of Edmond, saying, "His last day, they’re taking him away, and you know he’s going to be gone for a long time, and he looks at the camera, and you can read his lips. He says, 'I’ll be back,' and well, he was back for a while, but not a long while." Edmond's death marks an end to a chapter that left an indelible mark on Washington D.C.’s history—a narrative woven deep into the city's darkest years.
