Four individuals in Arizona have been arrested in connection with an elaborate vehicle theft ring that has reportedly pilfered high-end cars valued at approximately $1.4 million and funneled them across the border to Mexico. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the announcement came on December 2 during a press conference featuring DPS Deputy Director Lieutenant Colonel Ken Hunter, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, and Captain Erik Axlund, who leads the Vehicle Theft Task Force, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
The suspects, identified by DPS as Jorge Aguilar, Andrew Reyes, Luis Rodriguez, and Douglas Zalaya, are accused of coordinating a sophisticated operation within Maricopa County, involving the theft of vehicles, altering of vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and license plates, and trafficking the stolen goods south of the border. In a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell detailed the allegations, which include 12 counts of theft of means of transportation, various counts relating to trafficking stolen property, and forgery, among other charges.
Hunter emphasized the link between these thefts and "violent and organized crime" during the press conference, referencing a particular incident where a truck was taken by armed individuals from a residence in Waddell. This organized crime network purportedly spans across state lines and serves broader transnational criminal enterprises as their activities stretch into Mexico. In this case, a total of 22 high-end vehicles were recovered, as per Honk News.
DPS's Captain Axlund also provided practical advice to vehicle owners looking to safeguard their possessions. "I wouldn't keep your key fob in a bowl by your front door," DPS Capt. Erik Axlund said. "I'd keep it inside your house further in because of how far the signal can go," as stated by FOX 10 Phoenix. As a nod to previous decades' security measures, Allen also mentions the possibility of returning to physical anti-theft devices like the club.
