In a program that's been running for twenty-five years, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is offering free Muni service to revelers from 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 5 a.m. the following morning. This makes it easier for San Franciscans to partake in the festivity without the hassle of driving. The initiative supports the city's Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic fatalities.

According to an SFMTA press release, SFMTA Director of Transit Julie Kirschbaum shared her enthusiasm about the milestone: "A quarter-century of free rides on Muni for New Year’s Eve is an incredible milestone to celebrate 2025," she said. Kirschbaum commended the Muni operators and encouraged people to utilize this service for safe passage across the city.

This year, complimentary Muni rides will not require a Clipper Card tap or the activation of MuniMobile passes, as metro fare gates will remain open to all. The shuttle service includes the S Shuttle Trains between West Portal Station and 4th & King and Chinatown and 3rd & Mariposa. Trains will run until 2:00 a.m., and stations close fifteen minutes later.
