Residents in a Glendale neighborhood have raised concerns about frequent speeding on local streets, posing risks to families and pedestrians. Notably, concern is high on 71st Avenue, where drivers are often seen going well above the 25 miles per hour speed limit. This detail was shared on ABC15's Operation Safe Roads segment, where locals like Ed Siqueiros emphasized fears for the safety of children. "We have to look across that street, don't we? Hold on!" Siqueiros said when discussing walking his grandkids to the park, according to a ABC15 interview. The majority of drivers were found to be driving anywhere from five to 20 miles per hour over the limit.
While the Glendale Police Department has been approached about the issue, frequently by online traffic enforcement requests, Siqueiros believes long-term modifications, such as speed bumps, are needed for a significant change, “I’d like to have them put speed bumps to slow it down. That would change the scenario around here for this neighborhood," Siqueiros told ABC15. Residents interested in reporting traffic issues can access various resources, such as the City of Phoenix and Maricopa County websites, among others, provided to help with these complaints.
On a related note, the Glendale Police Department also hosted a DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint aimed at promoting traffic safety by discouraging impaired driving. The tactical placement of these checkpoints on December 14 was based on areas with a historical prevalence of DUI-related incidents. Sergeant Ryan Gunn of the Glendale Police Department highlighted the preventative nature of such operations, saying, “Impaired drivers put others on the road in danger’s way,” as reported by the City of Glendale CA. While no specific details regarding the location were disclosed, the effort was part of a wider initiative to reduce incidents by vigilant enforcement.
Drivers found under the influence face hefty consequences, including average fines of $13,500, not to mention license suspensions, The Glendale Police Department is funded in these efforts by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety and aims to uphold proactive policing, and community partnerships, as per the City of Glendale CA.
