Bay Area commuters will not face full freeway closures in the Phoenix area from tomorrow through January 6, as confirmed by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). This suspension of construction and maintenance work is intended to reduce disruptions for travelers during the busy holiday season.
According to ADOT's announcement, while major restrictions are not expected, some freeway work may still occur at times, potentially during weeknights. However, ADOT has decided not to schedule any closures on the weekends of Dec. 20-23, Dec. 27-30, and Jan. 3-6, acknowledging the importance of maintaining smooth traffic flow during the holiday period.
The suspension of closures also applies to state highways outside the Phoenix area, ensuring uninterrupted travel across Arizona from next Monday through January 6. ADOT also advises drivers to adhere to safe driving practices during this time. "Drivers should focus on safe driving behaviors, including using seat belts, keeping speeds in check, staying alert and avoiding distractions," the department emphasized. They also remind motorists to never drive while impaired and to always plan ahead to have a designated driver or use a ride service if necessary.
Future freeway improvements in the Phoenix area continue to be a priority for ADOT. These enhancements are in line with the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region, and many are facilitated by Proposition 400's funds—a dedicated sales tax approved by voters in 2004—and the recently approved Proposition 479, which extends the existing tax. Updates on real-time highway conditions can be readily accessed via ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site, the az511 app, or by calling 511 directly.
