Luigi Mangione, 26, has been arrested in connection with the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione had lived in a co-living space called Surfbreak near Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu from January to June 2022. He was known for starting a book club, promoting personal development, and dealing with chronic back pain, as mentioned by Civil Beat.
"He was just such a thoughtful and deeply compassionate person at everything he did," said Jackie Wexler, who lived with him at Surfbreak and attended the University of Pennsylvania. He was arrested in Pennsylvania and faces charges, including carrying a gun without a license and possessing "instruments of crime." After Surfbreak, Mangione lived in an apartment on South Street in Honolulu from October 1, 2022, to August 31. He left without explanation due to a roommate swap. He worked remotely for a California-based company during this time, according to a report by KHON2.
Surfbreak founder R.J. Martin, still reeling from the news of the arrest, recalled Mangione's commitment to health and pain management. "He mentioned he had a back injury, maybe it was pre-existing? But he was doing everything he could to not be in pain," Martin told KHON2. Mangione was known for being kind and a good listener. Martin last communicated with Mangione through text messages over the summer, around the same time when Mangione seemingly vanished from their usual circles.
In November 2023, he received a citation for hiking in a "closed area" at Nuuanu Pali Lookout. He pled no contest and paid a $100 fine. Friends are still struggling to understand the news, with one former roommate telling KHON2, "I’m shocked that he went about something like this, from the person I lived with. it seems unimaginable."
