A fatal incident occurred on Interstate 84 in Hood River County when a pedestrian, identified as 38-year-old Michael Joseph Sampson of Hood River, was struck by a Volvo commercial motor vehicle. The accident happened near milepost 64, and Oregon State Police responded to the scene at around 5:11 p.m. on Monday, according to a report on FlashAlert.
During rush hour traffic, Sampson was reportedly running eastbound on the westbound on-ramp when he entered the highway. A large vehicle, towing a trailer and driven by 62-year-old Carl Ronald Frank of Kelso, Washington, collided with Sampson. Authorities declared Sampson deceased at the scene upon arrival.
The highway was closed for approximately three hours as investigators conducted a detailed on-scene investigation. In addition to state police, the response team included the Hood River Police Department, Hood River Sheriff's Office, Hood River Fire Department, and ODOT.
