A prolonged SWAT standoff that began late last night near Dixie Highway and Northeast 18th Street in Fort Lauderdale finally came to a sudden end early this morning. WSVN reported the standoff began around midnight and it was not until roughly 5 a.m. that the tension-filled episode was resolved, leaving neighborhood residents unable to access their homes for the duration.
NBC6 disclosed that neighbors were forced to quickly vacate their homes for hours, with some, like a resident who could only watch from across the street, unable to get through. "My wife was telling me there's a lot of police cars out here and everything. I couldn't get through so I'm parking across the street," he told NBC Miami. The standoff not only included the deployment of a K-9 unit and drones but also featured the detonation of two flashbangs shortly before the conclusion when one individual was taken into custody.
Throughout the ordeal, residents like Nilo Sudback were left to merely spectate and wait. "They had a drone flying up over the area as well over in the area as well so yeah it’s been something," Sudback recounted to WSVN. "I originally walked outside my apartment about a quarter after 11 p.m., and here we are—it’s after 2 a.m., and we still haven’t been able to get back." As per NBC6, the crisis commenced before midnight and witnessed a significant deployment of law enforcement resources including an armored SWAT vehicle in addition to the aforementioned drones.
The individual in question was reported to have barricaded themselves inside an apartment, causing substantial disruption for those living nearby. As civilians tried to make sense of the situation, authorities continued to urge the person to surrender. An eyewitness related how he heard authorities repeatedly ask someone to come out with their hands up, NBC6 informed. By early morning, after the use of tactical devices to quickly diffuse the situation, people were allowed to once again return to their homes.
Further details regarding the identity of the detained person or the cause behind the SWAT response have not been disclosed. Local 10 added that detectives have reached out to the community, urging those with any information to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477, assuring confidentiality to those who come forward.
