On the heels of a modernization push from the Illinois Secretary of State's office, vehicle owners in the state can now enjoy the convenience of drive-thru and supermarket-based DMV services. A newly opened drive-thru DMV kiosk in Lombard, Illinois, and 15 additional "fast lane" kiosks installed in grocery stores across the state have turned routine administrative errands into a matter of a few minutes' diversion from daily life.

As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the drive-thru kiosk, located at the Lombard driver services facility, simplifies the process of updating license plate stickers and renewing registrations, accessible 24/7 from the comfort of one's car. "This creates a better environment for folks who visit our office, and just adds a new level of convenience for people to fit things into their busy schedules," Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said, emphasizing the facility's design to align with the public's need for efficiency.

Alongside the drive-thru service, an announcement from CBS News Chicago detailed the introduction of kiosks within 15 grocery stores, suggesting a pilot program of high convenience. Strategically placed in familiar locations such as Jewel, Mariano's, Kroger, Meijer, and Ruler Foods, these kiosks enable Illinoisans to renew licenses or obtain new vehicle stickers while attending grocery shopping or household errands.

Renewal tasks that these innovative kiosks support, describe a two-minute process that only requires a registration card or renewal letter, and the facility accepts multiple forms of payment, albeit with an additional transaction fee. "Fast-Lane kiosks offer added convenience for Illinois drivers who now have the ability to renew their driver's license or purchase a vehicle sticker while they're running errands or buying their groceries," Giannoulias told CBS News Chicago, highlighting the state's commitment to enhancing public service accessibility.

Despite the convenience offered by these new kiosks, drivers needing to apply for a brand new driver's license or state ID will still find themselves required to visit traditional DMV facilities. An appointment system is also in place for services inside the Lombard DMV building, which excludes the drive-thru. Details about the scheduling and locations of the kiosks are made available on the Illinois Secretary of State's official website.
