The city of Jacksonville has witnessed a development in a homicide case dating back to June following the apprehension of a suspect. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office confirmed the arrest of 33-year-old Michael Ronald Smith, who has been charged with the murder of a 51-year-old man discovered dead on Moncrief Road West.
Details about the victim, identified as Caldwell, were limited, but it was reported that he was found unresponsive on the road back in June. Officers, having responded to a distress call, arrived at the scene only to find the lifeless body. News4JAX indicated that this incident took place on June 17, a date that has since marked a somber page in the community's history.
In a statement given by JSO spokesperson Ofc. Christian Hancock, the arrest occurred yesterday, and Smith was identified as a suspect in the course of the ongoing investigation. First Coast News reported Hancock's communication, adding that Smith was arrested without incident and is now awaiting trial behind bars.
Further complicating Smith's situation is an additional charge for possession of a firearm by an convicted felon. This nugget was disclosed in a news release covered by Action News Jax, noting detectives named Michael Smith Jr. as the prime suspect following their investigation.
