Jim Larranaga, who led the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team to a historic Final Four appearance in 2023, is stepping down as head coach. The announcement of his departure came in the early afternoon, marking the end of his tenure at the University of Miami. This change in leadership comes less than two years after the team's Final Four run.
The Miami Herald reported that many may remember Larranaga's locker room dances and entertaining stories, but those moments faded as the Hurricanes struggled with a 4-8 record this season and a slump in 18 of their last 22 games since last season. Despite an overhaul of the 2024 roster with ten new players, the team continued to struggle. After an overtime loss to Mount St. Mary's, Larranaga appeared deflated in interviews, repeatedly pointing to his team's lack of defense and rebounding.
Larranaga's coaching career has been marked by success, with a 274-174 record over the past 14 years and six NCAA Tournament appearances. Players like Isaiah Wong and Jordan Miller were key to the program's success, but after their graduation, replacing them became a challenge Larranaga could not overcome.
WPTV reported that Tony Bennett of Virginia, along with other ACC coaches, has expressed frustration with the current landscape of college sports, particularly the challenges related to NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals. "College athletics is not in a healthy spot. It's not," Bennett said in October, sharing his concerns about the direction of collegiate sports.
Associate head coach Bill Courtney, a close friend of Larranaga for nearly thirty years, will replace him for the remainder of the season.
