A member of the Kennesaw State Police Department, Lt. Robert Milam, is facing significant challenges after sustaining severe burns in a house fire while saving his family. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Milam rushed into his burning home last Thursday to ensure his family's safety, tragically losing their home and all possessions in the process.

The incident, which has left Lt. Milam with burns over nearly 22% of his body, occurred in Cartersville, and he described the harrowing experience in an interview with Atlanta News First. "It had gotten a lot bigger and the only way I could get back to Misty to get her out was to go through it. It all happened so fast. I wasn’t feeling anything at the time," said Milam.

Despite the injury and loss, the veteran officer is maintaining a positive outlook, focusing on the well-being of his fiancée, Misty, who was unharmed in the blaze. "I’m glad Misty’s okay. I hate that our house, all of our stuff got burned up but, you know, it is what it is, you can’t go back and change that. There is nothing that can be done that can change the past. We can only move forward," Milam told Atlanta News First.

As Lt. Milam undergoes treatment and anticipates multiple surgeries, his colleagues and the community are stepping up to support him in his recovery. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help ease the financial burden of medical bills and recovery from the fire. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the fundraiser has raised over $17,000 toward a $60,000 goal as of this morning. In light of his service to the community, the department emphasized, "Throughout his career, Lieutenant Milam has tirelessly served his community and helped those in need. Now, he and his family need our support during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of their home, and possessions, and mounting medical expenses have created an overwhelming burden, especially during the holiday season."

Those wishing to contribute to the officer's recovery can find more information through the GoFundMe page. In addition to financial support, Milam is also holding out hope for the return of his pets, whom he believes may have escaped the fire.
