Kentwood has marked the beginning of a new era with the groundbreaking of its long-awaited community center. According to WWMT, despite the inclement weather conditions on Thursday, officials and residents gathered to celebrate the commencement of construction on the 72,000-square-foot facility, a key component of the city's parks improvement plan backed by voters in 2022.

The center promises a range of state-of-the-art amenities, including an inclusive fitness center with specialized equipment for individuals with disabilities, three full-sized basketball courts, and an indoor track. Proving as mayor Stephen Kepley, a futuristic AI-powered multi-sport simulator and spaces for hosting social events are also on the blueprint, told WOODTV.

Officials detail that the community center is meant to foster inclusiveness and activity among Kentwood's growing population. In a commitment to community support, the establishment will also include a 'Little Free Pantry' and a bistro and cafe intended to serve as welcoming spaces for social connection.

Mayor Kepley shared with WZZM13 that envisioning the project since 2003, he remarked, "For me, it really is a special time to think back to 2003, when we envisioned this idea on a small board." He continued, "Now, to see it becoming a reality, it’s a remarkable feeling. The dreams of those who led Kentwood in the past are now coming to fruition."

Expected to open in the summer of 2026, the Kentwood Community Center plans to play host to a variety of events, ranging from sports tournaments to weddings, and will include the first municipal-owned liquor license in parks and recreation facilities across West Michigan. The community center will serve as the new home for the city's Christmas tree, a sentiment he shared at the city's holiday parade and tree lighting, as per WOODTV.
