Yesterday afternoon, a boat fire erupted at Berth 217 SPD, with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responding to the emergency. The fire department reported that approximately a 30-foot motorcraft with five people on board was involved in the blaze. According to LAFD's alert, the incident happened at around 5:04 PM and the first call was at 4:37 PM. Firefighters were quick to evacuate all occupants safely to LAFD Boat 3, with no injuries reported. This prompt response averted a possibly catastrophic incident.
Initial reports suggested that the fire may have started in the engine compartment, with the boat's captain being the source of this information. The crews tackled an interior fire extinguishing the bulk of it and eventually towed the vessel to the salvage yard for final extinguishment and required overhaul. The specifics of the vessel and the origins of the fire are to be investigated by the Port Police under Inc# 1108.
The coordination between different units of the LAFD was instrumental in the successful handling of the situation. As detailed by the LAFD, multiple teams were involved including Battalion 6, crews from stations such as E112, E238, E248, E36, and E40, and Rescue Ambulance RA112. Specialized teams T38 and T48 were also mentioned in the response. The fire was contained within a localized area, preventing any further damage to the surrounding property or environment.
