Las Vegas police responded to a potentially dangerous situation on Christmas Eve, as they reported to a call regarding a man armed inside a residence on La Barca Lane. As per the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), two individuals informed arriving officers of a male inside who was allegedly carrying a gun.
The situation escalated when the armed man damaged a police vehicle with a knife, refusing to surrender despite multiple attempts from officers to resolve the incident peacefully. The ordeal led to a standoff, prompting SWAT and crisis negotiators to head to the scene. LVMPD's statement detailed that, during this time the suspect attempted to retrieve a long gun he had previously placed outside the residence, leading to officers firing non-lethal bean bag rounds and one duty round that did not hit the suspect.
Ultimately, the SWAT team apprehended the suspect after what became the 17th officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas this year. The man, whose identity has not been released yet, was transported to Sunrise Hospital with minor injuries. Details about the incident remain scarce as LVMPD continues its investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact LVMPD's Force Investigation Team, or, to maintain anonymity, Crime Stoppers.
A media statement by Captain Kurt McKenzie is available for further information, accessible through a link on the LVMPD website. According to the LVMPD news release, the department will disclose the identity of the officer involved in the shooting after the policy-mandated 48 hours have passed. The department emphasizes that the inquiry into this incident is ongoing and calls for public assistance in gathering more details.
