A startling discovery in Grantsville, Utah, on Sunday evening, drew a rapid response from the Unified Fire Bomb Squad's Special Operations Division following the unearthing of a live World War II-era artillery shell. According to a statement from Unified Fire, as reported by ABC4, bomb technicians arrived at the scene near 5 p.m. after being alerted to the potentially dangerous relic.
Following confirmation that the shell was indeed live, the services of the military were enlisted to handle its safe removal from the Grantsville property, though the subsequent fate of the shell remains undisclosed as of now, no injuries have been associated with its discovery or removal. An advisory from officials urges the public to maintain a safe distance and contact emergency services immediately upon encountering similar objects, as detailed by FOX13.
As the involved agencies delve into the perplexing question of how the ordnance arrived at its final resting spot, and for how long it lay dormant, there appears to be consensus that its presence wasn't the result of criminal activities. As obtained by KSL, Bomb Squad representative Porter expressed gratitude towards the homeowners for their prudent response to the shell, reminding and reiterating the importance of alerting authorities in such circumstances: "If you're to find any kind of unexploded ordnance, whether it's blasting caps or dynamite or any kind of wartime artillery shells, ammunition, don't mess with it, don't touch it. Call 911," and added, "Get us started, let us come out. We can check it out, and we can handle it if we need to."
