
A two-vehicle collision near Wonder Lake has resulted in the death of a local man and injuries to a Florida resident, as reported by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. The incident, which occurred on Barnard Mill Road in the vicinity of Summit Drive, was responded to by multiple emergency agencies including the Wonder Lake Fire Department, and McHenry Fire Protection District.
On the afternoon of December 27, a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country Pickup driven by a 49-year-old Wonder Lake man, and a 2008 Mazda 6, operated by a 65-year-old man from Naples, Florida collided under unclear circumstances. According to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, the Mazda veered over the centerline, resulting in an offset head-on crash with the Chevrolet which remained on the roadway, while the Mazda rested in a wooded area following the collision.
The driver of the Chevrolet was quickly transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. The McHenry Sheriff's website states that "The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene." Both vehicles had their airbags deployed, and it has been confirmed that the drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit along with the McHenry County Coroner's Office, are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the precise factors leading up to the fatal crash.
