A 32-year-old man from Louisville, Kentucky, has been handed a 15-year federal prison sentence for distributing child sexual abuse material. James Ray Nichols was also ordered to endure 25 years of supervised release post-imprisonment and to register as a sex offender. His sentence follows a guilty plea for the distribution of child pornography.
According to a press release by the Department of Justice, Nichols was caught in an undercover sting operation that involved him using a social media application to share explicit material with someone he believed to be the mother of an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old. This 'mother' was an undercover officer from the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Task Force and a Detective from Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) in the Southern District of Florida.
The operation ran from January to July 2024, seeing Nichols sharing multiple videos of child abuse with the undercover agent. On July 17, HSI agents conducted a search warrant at his residence in Kentucky, where Nichols was discovered in possession of a phone containing a large collection of exploitative material involving minors. Following the search, he was arrested and transferred to the Southern District of Florida to face charges.
Additionally, Nichols has agreed to pay $10,000 in restitution to the victims of the abuse material he distributed. The case was investigated by HSI West Palm Beach and PBSO and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Schiller. It is part of the larger Project Safe Childhood initiative, a DOJ-launched operation aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse across the United States.
