The stretch of Interstate 10 between Ina and Ruthrauff Roads in Tucson is on the brink of a major facelift, with construction poised to wrap up in 2025. Arizona's Department of Transportation (ADOT) is spearheading the efforts, and the project encompasses the reconstruction and expansion of a four-mile section of the freeway, including revamps of the Orange Grove and Sunset Road interchanges.
With a budget set at $171 million, the much-needed I-10 improvements are set to promote safety and streamline traffic flow with wider entrance and exit ramps as part of the Orange Grove Road interchange, slated for early 2025 completion. "Traffic is already using newly rebuilt lanes," per AZDOT's update. The reconfiguration will also see the expansion of I-10 from three to four lanes in each direction. ADOT has committed to sustaining three lanes of traffic open during peak hours to minimize disruptions and keep the community and businesses connected through the ongoing work.
Later into 2025, the focus of development is expected to shift toward another section of I-10, this time from Kino Parkway to Country Club Road. This expansive $600 million initiative will not only add lanes between Kino Parkway and Alvernon Way but also revamp the Kino Parkway interchange and introduce a new one at Country Club Road. The envisioned improvements also consider pedestrian and communal facets, such as a westbound on-ramp at the Alvernon Way interchange and a connection between the North and South Kino Sports Complex.
Groundbreaking for the next phase is expected in mid-2025, kicking off a projected three-year endeavor wrapping up in 2028, according to AZDOT's announcement. These plans also interact with Tucson's broader transportation landscape, with ADOT reporting other projects like a repaving initiative for 20 miles of SR 90 in Sierra Vista, and the deployment of an intelligent transportation system on I-19 from Nogales to Tucson that promises to bolster communication with overhead message boards.
