A man was arrested in connection with a collision in Maryvale that resulted in the deaths of two people, authorities said. The destructive event unfolded in the early hours of Dec. 15, when Francisco Heredia-Mendivil, 28, lost control of his Chevy Camaro while attempting a passing maneuver gone awry, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Heredia-Mendivil was eastbound on Indian School Road and, in trying to overtake a slower vehicle, reportedly steered too sharply and barreled into the opposing lane of traffic where his vehicle collided head on with a Volkswagen Jetta. Inside the Jetta were cousins Erick Segura, 35, and Alonso Franco, 37, who were both pronounced dead at the scene. In addition, a 16-year-old passenger sustained injuries and required hospitalization.
Heredia-Mendivil himself was injured in the crash and, after being treated at the hospital, he was booked into Maricopa County jail, as per AZ Family. The arrest occurred on Saturday, a few days following his release from medical care.
The investigation into the crash by Phoenix police is still ongoing. The tragic accident has raised concerns about traffic safety and the serious consequences of reckless driving. The 16-year-old involved, whose name is not being released because of their age, is expected to recover from injuries, including a broken arm, as per FOX 10 Phoenix.
