A man was shot and killed by Broward Sheriff's Office deputies after a domestic disturbance call escalated into a chase that concluded near a Fort Lauderdale Tri-Rail station yesterday afternoon. CBS News reports that the altercation began just before 1:50 p.m., when deputies were dispatched to a Broward County home in response to reports of a domestic situation involving a firearm.
The situation escalated when the suspect fled the initial scene, leading deputies on a chase. The pursuit ended near Southwest 21st Terrace, close to the train station. As reported by NBC Miami, deputies were forced to use lethal force against the man, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. A firearm was recovered at the scene, but BSO spokesperson Carey Codd could not confirm whether the gun was visible or in the man's possession when deputies opened fire.
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed as investigations continue. The number of deputies involved in the incident has not been specified, but those who discharged their weapons have since been placed on administrative assignment. BSO's Internal Affairs Unit is examining the shooting, and separately, an investigation is also underway regarding the domestic disturbance that precipitated these events.
Chantelle McCollin, who lives near the site of the recent and another deadly shooting days prior, told NBC Miami, "Again, directly behind my house. It's scary, because we just had a shooting happened on the other side of our neighborhood." The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation into the shooting.
Following the incident, the Tri-Rail service reportedly continued without significant disruption. WSVN noted that the crime scene was cleared before 10:30 p.m. that same day.
