A fatal shooting occurred on the North Side of San Antonio following a foot chase involving a San Antonio Police Department officer and, a man who reportedly wielded a handgun. According to Chief William McManus, the incident took place around 3:30 p.m. yesterday in the 8500 block of Jones Maltsberger Road. It began with an officer attempting a pedestrian stop before escalating to a pursuit through a field and into a drainage ditch, where the confrontation turned deadly.
The officer, who had roughly four years of service with SAPD, initially tried to engage the man in conversation, but the man fled, prompting the chase. Chief McManus detailed that the man pointed what appeared to be a .22 caliber pistol at the officer before being shot. "The suspect continued to run under the roadway, turned around again and it appears that he fired a shot at the officer, and the officer returned fire," McManus said a statement obtained by KTSA News.
The suspect was hit in the upper body, leading to his death at the scene. Further statements by Chief McManus conveyed to KSAT revealed that even after the first gunshot by the officer, the man continued to run before turning and firing a shot at the officer. The officer was unharmed during the exchange.
Investigations into the shooting are ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the events leading to the fatal exchange. As part of standard procedure, details about the shooting and the identities of those involved are being withheld while the case is reviewed. The officer, who was not injured, is expected to be placed on administrative duty during the investigation.
