A man was fatally shot in a Phoenix parking lot last Saturday, Phoenix Police are actively investigating the incident. Responding to the scene around 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of 24th Street and Van Buren, officers found 53-year-old Maurice Stewart with gunshot wounds, and despite being rushed to a local hospital, he could not survive his injuries, as reported Fox 10 Phoenix.
Quick response by patrol officers saw the identification of a getaway vehicle, leading to the apprehension of 20-year-old Nicholas Rutledge, said Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower and according to an interview with Fox 10 Phoenix, officers encountered Rutledge who then fled on foot, after a chase, he was arrested without further incident, and stands accused of first-degree murder.
The central Phoenix community remains shaken as details come to light regarding the circumstances of the fatal encounter. A dispute is reported to have taken place before the deadly shooting, as noted in 12News, however, the nature of the argument has not been disclosed. Local authorities continue to investigate, pledging to update the public as additional information becomes available following this event.
