The Knoxville Police Department is investigating a tragic incident late Friday night near Hall of Fame Drive in Knoxville. According to WVLT, the accident occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. when a vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area, subsequently catching fire.

A man was killed in the single-car crash, after being trapped inside the burning vehicle. Officers who arrived at the scene tried to save the victim, shattering car windows and battling the blaze with fire extinguishers. Still, their efforts were in vain as the fire quickly overtook the car, according to a statement obtained by WBIR.

While the identity of the victim is yet to be confirmed, his body has been sent to the Knoxville Regional Forensic Center for identification and analysis. "KPD’s crash reconstruction investigators and crime scene technicians responded to the scene in addition to Medical Examiner’s Office personnel," the Knoxville Police Department detailed, as reported by WATE.
