
A man was injured in a shooting that unfolded near Champions Square in New Orleans after 11 p.m. yesterday. According to a report by WDSU, the victim received immediate medical attention from officers nearby and was later transported to a hospital by ambulance. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.
The event occurred amid the crowd of fans and families attending a high school state championship game at the nearby Caesars Superdome. The suspected gunman, Gavin Calais, was quickly apprehended by police officers stationed nearby who responded to the gunfire. At the time of the shooting, officers from Franklinton Police and the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office were also present, providing escort to the teams. The Franklinton Police Department praised the collective efforts on social media, stating, "We got everyone home safe and sound and for that, I give God the glory. I'm proud of our team, I'm proud of our support groups and I'm proud of our fans. You exhibited toughness, resolve class and courage under fire......for that, we are Champions!" according to a statement obtained by WWLTV.
"Situations such as this can be very traumatic, so parents, sit down and talk with your kids. It's okay to be upset about it, it's okay to be fearful and it's okay to be glad you weren't injured. All of these things are natural responses to unnatural circumstances," the Franklinton Police Department stated, according to WWLTV.
The NOPD has not released the identity of the victim and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The incident closed down sections of LaSalle Street, leaving many unable to access their vehicles, according to NOLA.com.
