A somber incident unfolded yesterday afternoon when a man was arrested after a domestic dispute led to him allegedly kidnapping his daughter in Manchester-by-the-Sea, a seaside town in Massachusetts. The events began around 1:30 p.m. when local police responded to a reported domestic incident on Summer Street, where a man had fled by foot with his 5-year-old daughter, as Boston 25 News reported.
With the urgent need for collaboration in such critical circumstances, the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department called in reinforcements from the Massachusetts State Police K-9 Unit and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, utilizing four K-9 teams in total. The search effort led authorities to a cemetery behind Manchester-Essex Regional High School, where the suspect was found concealed behind a tombstone, leaves scattered over his person, and his daughter safely in tow.
"We are relieved that the child was safely located and reunited with her mother,” Police Chief Todd Fitzgerald said, as noted in a statement to NBC Boston. The young girl was indeed unharmed through the ordeal and is now back with her mother.
The man involved, whose name has not been released, is facing an array of charges including, but not limited to, domestic assault and battery, assault and battery of a child under 14, reckless endangerment of a child, carrying a dangerous weapon, parental kidnapping, and possession of class B and E drugs, as NBC Boston cited. He was reportedly minorly injured upon arrest and was subsequently hospitalized at Beverly Hospital for evaluation.
According to police statements, there is no current threat to public safety following the incident. The man will face arraignment on these charges today in Salem District Court.
