On Wednesday morning, a westbound MARTA train encountered an unexpected derailment near King Memorial Station at approximately 7:30 a.m. with 16 passengers on board. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that, according to MARTA officials, there were fortunately no injuries resulting from the incident. Passengers were quickly transferred to an alternative train and were taken to Candler Park Station for their safety and convenience.
The transit agency has begun to thoroughly investigate the cause behind the derailment. “Preliminary findings show one set of train wheels lost contact with the rail. Rail Operations is currently working to re-rail the car and move it to the rail yard,” MARTA stated in a press release, as reported by Atlanta News First. Currently, efforts are underway to swiftly re-rail the train car and transport it to a rail yard for further examination.
As a result of the incident, rail service between Georgia State and Candler Park stations has been suspended. In a bid to minimize the disruption to their customers’ commutes, MARTA is providing bus transportation as a substitute between the affected stations. Additionally, riders can also take advantage of reduced-price journeys through the MARTAConnect program, an alternative designed to facilitate transportation around such unexpected disruptions.
Extended delays for the Blue and Green lines are also expected, with MARTA advising passengers to plan their travel accordingly. Atlanta News First emphasizes that "extensive delays are happening on the Blue and Green lines," urging travelers to prepare to adjust their transit plans. MARTA has also involved both the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in addressing the derailment.
Regular train service through the King Memorial Station area is expected to resume following the resolution of the situation, although an exact timeline has not been provided yet.
