While the festive lights of Hanukkah and the joyful gatherings for Kwanzaa illuminate Maryland, communities across the state come together to celebrate cultural heritage and traditional holidays. According to WBALTV, Baltimore City's Tendea Family marked their fourth annual Kwanzaa event this year, embracing "umoja" or unity, which program director Tasin Muhammad-Miles described as crucial for reconnecting a fragmented history and culture.
In contrast, Howard County's second day of Hanukkah was brightened by an outdoor menorah lighting organized by Chabad of Clarksville, where Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sufrin emphasized the importance of bringing light and warmth to the community at a time when the chill of winter pervades. The echo of collective prayers underscores the strength of community and personal resolve. He mentioned that these traditions of lighting the menorah in public signify a collective effort to dispel darkness, a sentiment reinforced over the years through shared traditions, music, and dance.
Simultaneously, Kwanzaa festivities radiate through Baltimore's Henderson Hopkins Elementary School, where the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum and Keur Khaleyi African Dance & Cultural Institute collaborated to instill in children the holiday's principles, as reported by WMAR2 News This year's theme, "It's All About the Children," placed heavy emphasis on the need for unity portrayed through interactive programs like music, dance, and storytelling, thereby solidifying their role in building a unified future.
Momma Deborah Pierce-Fakunle of the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum shared, "Kwanzaa is 365," alluding to the year-round practice of Kwanzaa's principles rather than limiting their observance to the holiday season each resident who participates, whether it's through quiet reflection or active involvement in community-centric activities like the lighting of the menorah or dancing at a Kwanzaa event, asserts a piece of themselves into a tapestry of shared cultural identity, as reported by WMAR2 News.
